Hobbes’ conception of human nature as detailed in Leviathan is largely influenced by his first-hand experiences in 17th century England. As detailed in lecture, Hobbes’ life was characterized by constant fear, which reached its apex during the English Civil War. During the conflict, he saw a society with no clear sovereign power ripping itself apart in a state of absolute war. Published at the end of the War, Hobbes’ Leviathan details his thoughts on the importance of a clearly defined sovereign and the absolute power with which that sovereign should be instilled. Hobbes’ equality of humans in their ability to kill one another, as described in Chapter 13, makes even the weakest humans, who â€Å"either by secret machination, or by confederacy with others† (618) can kill the strongest, a potential threat; in other words, Hobbes sees every human in the state of nature as naturally threatening to every other human. He comments on this natural distrust in his conception of diffidence and writes that â€Å"from this diffidence of one another, there is no way for any man to secure himself †¦ till he see no other power great enough to endanger him,† (618-619). To make matters worse, Hobbes also believes that there is a natural human tendency toward glory. He writes that a natural appetite of humanity is that â€Å"[j]oy, arising from imagination of a man’s own power and ability, which is called GLORIFYING,† (595). This in itself might not appear to affect humanity negatively. However, Hobbes believes that in the state of nature, it is one of the principal causes of violence, as it makes people â€Å"pursue farther than their security requires †¦ for [their own] reputation,† (619). When he arrives, she keeps asking him when he will be leaving and at one point even says â€Å"Boy Willie, I want you and Lymon to go ahead and leave my house. Just go on somewhere† (Wilson 15). Berniece does not want her brother to be at her house, she does not get along with him and thinks that he just causes trouble wherever he goes. Although you do have to make sure that you turn you work in on time. Online college to me is like have a second chance to further you education. I know that they didn’t offer online classes way back when I was born. So those who didn’t get to make it to a traditional college were just out of luck. Until they came up with the bright idea of having online colleges. They accept you with a G. E. D. Even if you didn’t graduate. No you don’t get full scholarships, but you do get financial aid. Along with Pell grants to help you pay for your classes. They give you a chance to pay the financial aid back six months after you have graduated. Some loans that you get want you to immediately start paying them back. In my recent studies I found that online universities charge more for their classes than traditional colleges. I also found that most of the online colleges are for-profit. This means that they charge you more so they can get a cut out of what you have to pay back. Me personally I like the fact that I am able to go to school online, because I am a single mother. I got pregnant while I was still in high school so I never even had the choice of how I was going to further my education. Online universities have opened so many doors for young mothers, and the older generation that didn’t get to go to Moore House University on a full ride basketball, or football scholarship. Online graduates don’t get internships, but when you graduate you will have that degree under your belt. Employers will be happy to know that you took out the time to want to further you education. You are also able to meet new people and collaborate in class online, except you don’t get to have that face to face personal contact with your fellow class mates and professors. You have to go by how they word what they say to determine what type of tone they are saying it in. I like attending online college, because I can work on my own time as long as my work is turned in on time.
